Union Vale, NY (November 29, 2025) – A tragic single-car accident on Clove Road near Pleasant Ridge Farm Lane on Saturday evening, around 8 p.m., claimed the life of the 27-year-old male motorist.
Two EMT students who were in a separate vehicle came upon the crash and immediately provided care at the scene. Members of the Union Vale Fire Department soon arrived, and CPR was administered to the victim. He was transported to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The Dutchess County crash is currently under police investigation to determine the factors that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Understanding Single-Vehicle Crashes in New York
When a single-vehicle accident results in a fatality, the family of the deceased maintains the right to file a Wrongful Death claim if negligence can be proven against a third party. While driver error is often a factor, an investigation must look for other causes, as New York law permits a claim if the death was caused by a wrongful act, neglect, or default that was not the sole fault of the deceased driver.
This external liability can stem from three primary areas. First, a vehicle defect or mechanical failure, such as brake failure or steering column malfunction, could create a product liability claim against the vehicle manufacturer. Second, a roadway hazard, such as poorly maintained pavement, unmarked severe curves, or inadequate signage on the county road, could create a negligence claim against the municipality responsible for road maintenance.
The statute of limitations for filing a wrongful death claim in New York is generally two years from the date of the victim’s death.
