[12-18-2024] – Massena Community Mourns the Loss of Two Beloved Figures in Tragic Accident

Massena, NY – The community of Massena is deeply mourning the recent loss of two cherished members. Real “Frenchie” Coupal and Loretta Perez tragically died following a motor vehicle collision on the evening of December 17.

According to the St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies, the accident occurred around 8 p.m. at the intersection of State Highway 310 and County Route 34. Deputies reported that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Connor A. Graveline from Ogdensburg, was traveling east on County Route 34 when he failed to stop at the stop sign. This resulted in a collision with a 2022 GMC Acadia, which was operated by Real C. Coupal of Massena.

Sadly, both Coupal and his passenger, Loretta B. Perez, also from Massena, were pronounced dead at the scene. The community reflects on their significant contributions and commitments.

Mayor Greg Paquin expressed his sorrow in a statement, noting, “Frenchie and Loretta were two cornerstones of this community. Each individual was highly involved in the community, whether that be with the Hospital board, the Elks, or the Italian American Club. They were two wonderful people who contributed immensely to the community and whom I will miss dearly. My thoughts are with both of their families and I know the entire Massena community grieves.”

Similarly, Town Supervisor Sue Bellor shared her shock and condolences regarding the sudden loss of Coupal and Perez. In her remarks, she stated, “This was shocking news when I heard. Both Frenchie Coupal and Loretta Perez were highly regarded and successful business leaders. I worked alongside them on the Massena Memorial Hospital Board, and they always dedicated themselves to serving our community.” She added her personal connection: “We just had our club’s lunch yesterday where he made it a point to wish my family well for Christmas. I visited Loretta on Monday in her office, and since we are related (cousins), we had a wonderful conversation. This news is truly devastating for many of us.”

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, with no charges reported at this time. The Sheriff’s Office received support on the scene from the New York State Police, West Potsdam Fire Department, Canton Fire Department, Madrid Fire Department, Potsdam Rescue, Madrid Rescue, and the New York State Department of Transportation.
