According to Nassau County police, the accident involved 89-year-old Gerhard Frobart, from Farmingdale, who was driving, and his 88-year-old passenger, Ella Gimpel, from East Meadow. The incident took place around 5:30 p.m., as Frobart was traveling south on Loring Road.
Police reported that the car, a 2001 Ford Taurus, veered off the road and collided with the utility pole. Emergency responders pronounced Frobart dead at the scene. Gimpel was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, where she unfortunately succumbed later.
