[01-15-2023] – Eight injured in Cross River bus crash on Route 35
Lewisboro, NY – Eight adults sustained injuries following a bus accident on Route 35 in Cross River on Wednesday, January 15. According to Lewisboro Police Chief David Alfano, the bus, operated by Ability Beyond—a facility providing support to adults with disabilities in Chappaqua—was traveling eastbound on Route 35 around 3:46 p.m. when the incident occurred.
Chief Alfano detailed that two vehicles were stopped in front of the bus just before the collision. The bus driver apparently did not notice that the cars had halted and swerved abruptly to the right, moving onto the shoulder of the road to avoid a collision.
Unfortunately, the bus clipped another vehicle before it veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree. At the time of the crash, there were eight adults aboard the bus, all of whom were transported to Westchester Medical Center to receive treatment for injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. Additionally, one other vehicle involved sustained minor damages.
As for the bus driver, Chief Alfano confirmed that no charges are pending against them.
Ability Beyond, the agency that operates the bus, expressed gratitude towards the first responders present at the scene of the accident. In a statement released on Thursday, they said, “Ability Beyond wishes to thank the community members who rushed to the aid of our driver and the people that we support. The wellbeing of everyone involved is our top priority and we are ensuring that optimal care is being provided for those affected by the accident.”
