[01-09-2025] – I81 Briefly Shut Down After Tractor-Trailer Crash in Town of Homer

Town of Homer, NY – In the early hours of Thursday, January 9th, at approximately 2:20 AM, officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to I81 North in the Town of Homer. They received reports of two separate incidents involving tractor trailers.

Upon their arrival, law enforcement discovered one tractor trailer that had jack-knifed, obstructing both northbound lanes of I81. This truck was transporting tandem trailers, with the secondary trailer overturned on its side along the highway, creating the impression that there was indeed a second truck involved.

The stretch of I81 was shut down until around 6 AM Thursday to facilitate cleanup efforts. The Sheriff’s Office indicated that the incident was attributed to adverse weather and road conditions at the time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported following the crashes.

Assistance was provided on-site by several agencies, including the New York State Police.
