[01-17-2025] – Beacon Man Killed in Route 9 Collision with Tractor Trailer
Philipstown, NY – A 74-year-old man from Beacon lost his life in a tragic collision with a tractor trailer on Route 9 in southern Philipstown on Friday, January 17. The crash, which occurred near the intersection with Route 403 close to Graymoor, shut down both lanes of the highway for nearly eight hours.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Norton Segarra, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver, Glen Cochran, 60, of Milford, Connecticut, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 1:30 p.m. A preliminary investigation conducted by the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed that Segarra, traveling southbound, crossed the center line and collided head-on with the truck.
The highway remained closed until approximately 9:30 p.m. as crews worked to investigate, clear the wreckage, and restore safe conditions.
Authorities have not released further details about what may have caused Segarra to cross the center line. The investigation remains ongoing.
