Motorcycle Passenger, 34, Injured in Chain-Reaction Crash

Rochester, NY (July 9, 2026) – A 34-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a chain-reaction motorcycle crash on Lake Avenue, according to Rochester Police.

Around 10:10 p.m. on July 9, 2026, a motorcycle failed to stop at a red light at the corner of Lake Avenue and Britton Road and struck the rear bumper of a Pontiac, police say. The impact threw both the 40-year-old operator and his passenger from the motorcycle. The motorcycle came to rest in the southbound lane.

While officers were responding, a Rochester Police cruiser struck the unoccupied motorcycle lying on the road. A second vehicle then struck it as well. Rochester Police say the 40-year-old motorcyclist was ticketed for reckless driving and passing a red light. Both he and the 34-year-old passenger were transported by ambulance to a hospital. No one else was reported injured.

A passenger seat puts you entirely in someone else’s hands. When that person runs a red light and throws both of you from the motorcycle, the fact that you had no part in causing the crash still leaves you with the injuries, the bills, and the questions.

Motorcycle Accidents in Rochester, New York

When a motorcycle passenger is hurt because the operator was negligent, New York law gives that passenger the right to pursue a personal injury claim against the responsible party. The passenger is a separate victim in the eyes of the law, regardless of what ticket or citation was issued to the driver.

A citation for reckless driving and failing to stop at a red light is direct, documented evidence of negligence. That documentation matters in a civil claim and can help establish liability without requiring the passenger to prove anything beyond what the police report already confirms.

Steps a motorcycle passenger should take after a crash like this:

  • See a doctor today, even if injuries feel manageable. Soft tissue damage, concussions, and spinal injuries often worsen in the days following a crash, and any gap in medical care can complicate a later claim.
  • Do not give a recorded statement to any insurance company before speaking with an attorney. Adjusters use early statements to reduce what they pay out.
  • Preserve the police report, all medical records, photos of your injuries, and contact information for any witnesses at the scene.
  • Do not accept any settlement offer before consulting an attorney. Initial offers rarely reflect the full cost of treatment, recovery time, or lost wages.

Under New York law, injured parties generally have three years from the date of injury to file a personal injury claim (CPLR § 214). From the July 9, 2026 crash date, that deadline falls on July 9, 2029. Missing that window ends the ability to recover compensation, regardless of how clear the liability picture is.
