[01-16-2025] – Driver Killed in Three-Car Crash in Centereach
Centereach, NY – Authorities have reported that a driver lost their life in a three-car collision in Centereach on Thursday morning. The incident transpired on Nicolls Road, specifically at the intersection with Mark Tree Road, at approximately 7:40 a.m.
Mark Steele, a local resident, recounted the scene, saying, “My wife was crying. There were people everywhere. It was just a bad scene; it happens here all the time.” Upon witnessing the multi-car accident, Steele swiftly called 911 for help. He described hearing a loud crash, and upon looking out from his second-floor window, he saw one vehicle overturned and smoke billowing from another small black car.
According to police reports, a Honda Pilot traveling south on Nicolls Road veered into the northbound lanes and crashed into a Buick Encore. This collision subsequently caused the Buick to side-swipe a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Sadly, the driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Buick, identified as 28-year-old Arielle Klopis from West Islip, sustained injuries but they are not considered life-threatening, and she was promptly taken to the hospital. The Jeep’s driver, 28-year-old Nicolas Braccio from Merrick, fortunately emerged uninjured.
Mark Steele indicated that this part of Nicolls Road has witnessed too many accidents recently. He mentioned, “Probably in the last six months, two major accidents at Nicolls Road and Mark Tree.” Steele also expressed concern about the speed at which drivers often travel in the area, saying, “It’s going to happen again unfortunately.”
Police have since released the name of the deceased driver as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
