E-Bike Hit-and-Run Crashes in New York: Key Facts and First Steps
New York’s Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation, or MVAIC, requires that a hit-and-run be reported to police within 24 hours. For a hit-and-run, it also requires a Notice of Intention within 90 days of the accident. Those two rules decide whether some injured people can recover anything when the driver is never found.
- Get checked by a doctor the same day, even if nothing hurts, since pain from a crash can surface hours or days later.
- Write down everything you remember about the car, including color, plate digits, damage, and which way it went.
- Keep the e-bike, battery, helmet, and clothing unrepaired, and photograph every injury and every scrape on the bike.
- Look for cameras along North Spruce Street, such as stores, homes, and school or city buildings, and ask owners to save footage.
- Tell your own auto insurer about the crash, even if you were not in a car.
