Motorcyclist Killed After Being Struck by Turning SUV

Fenton, NY (July 2, 2026) – At approximately 7:10 a.m., a motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Hunt Hill Road in the town of Fenton, according to the New York State Police at Binghamton.

The New York State Police report that a 2012 Toyota RAV4 was traveling north on Hunt Hill Road when the operator began making a left turn into a driveway. A 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling south on Hunt Hill Road at the same time. The two vehicles collided at that point. Following the impact, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames.

The operator of the motorcycle did not survive, the New York State Police confirmed. The operator of the RAV4 did not report any injuries. Hunt Hill Road was closed during the investigation, which New York State Police Troop C is conducting.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

A left-turn collision that takes a motorcyclist’s life on a local road leaves the family facing questions about what the turning driver saw, what the law required, and what options exist going forward.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Fenton, NY

When a driver making a left turn strikes an oncoming motorcycle, the central legal question is who had the right of way and whether the turning driver yielded before completing the maneuver. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1141 requires a driver executing a left turn to yield to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction closely enough to be a hazard. That obligation applies whether the turn is into a private driveway or a public road.

Left-turn crashes are among the most common causes of fatal motorcycle accidents. The motorcycle’s smaller profile can make it harder for a turning driver to judge its approach speed. Attorneys and crash investigators examining a case like this one typically focus on:

  • Whether the RAV4 driver had an unobstructed view of southbound traffic on Hunt Hill Road before initiating the turn
  • The sight distance available from the turn point to where the motorcycle was traveling at the time of the crash
  • Physical evidence at the scene: skid marks, debris field, gouge marks, and the final rest position of both vehicles
  • Any surveillance cameras, residential doorbell cameras, or dash cameras that may have captured the approach or the impact
  • The mechanical condition of both vehicles, including braking systems and whether the RAV4’s turn signal was activated

New York follows a pure comparative fault standard. Even if the investigation eventually assigns a portion of fault to more than one party, the family may still pursue a wrongful death claim. Any recovery is reduced in proportion to the motorcyclist’s share of fault, but it is not eliminated.

A wrongful death claim in New York can cover economic losses, including the income the motorcyclist would have earned, and non-economic losses recognized under EPTL § 5-4.1, such as the guidance and care the family has lost. The claim belongs to the personal representative of the estate and is brought on behalf of surviving family members.

Under EPTL § 5-4.1, the family has two years from the date of death to file. For this crash, that deadline falls on July 2, 2028. The investigation’s timeline does not affect that clock. The two-year window runs from the date of death, not from the date any case is closed or charges are resolved.
