Hilton, NY (Sept. 28, 2026) – Three Hilton Central School buses were involved in a chain-reaction crash on Old Hojack Lane in Hilton on Monday afternoon.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. as all three buses approached the intersection with Hale Haven Drive. The third bus struck the back of the second bus, which then collided with the first bus as it was making a left turn onto Hale Haven Drive.
The three buses were carrying a total of 43 students. According to the Hilton Central School District, all students were evaluated at the scene, and no serious injuries were found. The district’s transportation department notified families as soon as possible.
No other vehicles were involved, and the investigation remains open.
Children’s Rights After a School Bus Accident
“No serious injuries” is reassuring news, and it is also worth knowing what it does and does not mean. Bumps, bruises, and even mild concussions in children do not always look serious in the minutes after a crash, and kids do not always describe pain the way adults do. If your child was on one of these buses and seems off in the days afterward, more tired than usual, complaining of headaches, or just not themselves, it is worth mentioning the crash to their pediatrician.
If your child was examined or treated for anything beyond a routine evaluation, keeping those records together is worthwhile, even if you do not think you will need them. Fault in a chain-reaction crash like this one generally falls on the vehicle that started it by rear-ending the bus ahead, and a child who was simply a passenger bears no responsibility for how the crash happened, regardless of which bus they were on.
Most families affected by a crash like this will not need to do anything more than what the school district has already handled. But if your child was more seriously affected or you have real concerns about their recovery, New York law allows a parent to pursue a claim on a child’s behalf for medical expenses and other losses tied to the crash.
