Jessup, PA (September 5, 2026) – A motorcyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries after being thrown from his bike on Lakeview Drive, police say.
The wreck happened around 6:30 p.m. Officials say the driver of the motorcycle hit a bump and flew over 100 feet off his bike. He was not wearing a helmet.
The driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, according to police. Officials have not released the driver’s condition.

Being thrown from a bike by something in the road leaves a rider facing a long recovery and very little explanation of how it happened.
Dangerous Road Conditions and Liability in Jessup, Pennsylvania
When police describe a rider hitting a bump, the condition of the road becomes part of the investigation. A motorcycle has two wheels and no cushion between the rider and the pavement. A ridge, sunken utility cover, pavement seam, or edge drop-off that a car absorbs can throw a rider clear of the bike.
Responsibility depends on who maintains that stretch of road. A borough street points to Jessup Borough. Other roads fall to the Lackawanna County Highway Department, PennDOT, a utility that opened the pavement, or a paving contractor still under contract.
The standard changes depending on which one it is.

- What evidence carries either claim: prior complaint records, work orders, inspection and paving logs, utility cut permits, earlier crash reports at the same spot, and photographs taken before a repair crew resurfaces the area
- Damages against a government body are capped. The cap is $500,000 for a local agency and $250,000 for the Commonwealth
Pennsylvania also requires written notice to the government unit within six months of the injury (42 Pa.C.S. § 5522). For a September 5, 2026 crash, that date is March 5, 2027. A court can excuse a late notice if there is a reasonable excuse for it, and when the claim is against a borough or county rather than the state, the clock does not run while an injured person is too incapacitated to give notice, for up to 90 days. Even so, the six-month date is the one to work toward, not to test.
The ordinary filing deadline is longer. An injury claim must generally be filed within two years of the crash (42 Pa.C.S. § 5524), which is September 5, 2028 here.
Police have not stated what caused the bump or who maintains that section of Lakeview Drive. Expect an insurer to focus on the rider instead. Pennsylvania uses modified comparative negligence, so a rider can still recover as long as he is not more than 50 percent at fault, with his award reduced by his share (42 Pa.C.S. § 7102).
