Town of LaGrange, NY (Oct. 30, 2026) – Two pedestrians, ages 67 and 71, both of Hillsdale, New York, were injured at a Taconic State Parkway rest area, New York State Police said. Both pedestrians and the Subaru’s driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, according to State Police.
State Police were dispatched to the Taste of New York rest area on the Taconic State Parkway at approximately 2:20 p.m. on October 30. The rest area is at mile marker 46.6 in the Town of LaGrange. The call was for a report of a personal injury motor vehicle collision involving pedestrians.
According to NYSP, Charles W. Schaubhut, 84, of Hudson, New York, was attempting to park a 2014 Subaru in a parking space. A preliminary investigation found that Schaubhut accelerated while parking, causing the vehicle to travel over the curb and onto the sidewalk, striking the two pedestrians.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
When a Vehicle Goes Over a Curb and Hits Pedestrians in New York
New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles, citing the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, reported 14,878 pedestrian crashes statewide in 2024. Of those, 14,320 resulted in an injury. A pedestrian struck on a sidewalk or in a parking area may have a claim for those injuries.
Responsibility depends on what the investigation shows about the driver, the vehicle, and the layout of the parking area.
First steps: Ask State Police for the crash report number and photograph the curb and sidewalk. Note nearby cameras, since footage can be overwritten quickly. Keep every medical record and bill. New York no-fault coverage can pay medical bills and lost earnings for a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. File the application within 30 days of the crash, which makes the deadline November 29, 2026.
Who may be liable: The driver, whose liability insurance may apply, and any other party the investigation links to the vehicle or the property.
Deadlines: New York generally allows three years to file a personal injury claim (CPLR § 214), which puts the deadline at October 30, 2029. If a public entity may share responsibility for the property, notice of claim is generally due within 90 days, by January 28, 2027. The governing rules are Court of Claims Act § 10 and Gen. Mun. Law § 50-e.
