Town of Lockport, NY (Oct. 30, 2026) – The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said a 27-year-old woman died after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Rapids Road and Bartz Road. Officers responded shortly after 3:15 p.m. on October 30.
The sheriff’s office said a preliminary investigation found that a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling west on Bartz Road. The Jeep failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of Rapids Road, investigators said. It was struck by a 2015 Ford Fiesta traveling southeast on Rapids Road.
The Ford’s driver, the 27-year-old woman, sustained life-threatening injuries. She was transported to Erie County Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased.
The Jeep’s driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. According to police, the driver is cooperating with the investigation.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
What Families Ask After a Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in Niagara County
The Federal Highway Administration counted 12,036 intersection-related traffic deaths in the United States in 2022, out of 42,514 traffic deaths overall. These are the questions families ask most often after a fatal crash, answered under New York law.
Who can file a wrongful death claim in New York?
The estate’s personal representative files it for the family. The Surrogate’s Court appoints that person first, and an attorney can guide the family through the process.
What does a wrongful death claim cover?
Damages can include funeral and medical expenses and the financial support and services the family lost. A separate survival claim can address the pain and suffering before death.
Does a preliminary finding that a driver failed to yield decide the claim?
No. A preliminary finding is not a legal ruling, and insurers can still dispute fault, so vehicle data, scene photos, and witness statements matter.
How long does the family have to file?
Two years from the death, by October 30, 2028 (EPTL § 5-4.1). Other injury claims generally have three years, until October 30, 2029 (CPLR § 214).
What should the family do first?
Request the crash report from the sheriff’s office and ask that both vehicles be preserved. Send insurer calls to one person, and keep every funeral and medical bill.
