Schoharie, NY – Mary Ball, 95, Killed After Pedestrian Crash on Barton Hill Road

Fatal Schoharie crash

Schoharie, NY (November 2, 2026) – Mary Ball, 95, of Schoharie died after she was hit by a vehicle on Barton Hill Road in Schoharie, according to the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the pedestrian crash at about 4 p.m. on November 2. Ball was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was not injured, stayed at the scene, and is cooperating with the investigation, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators said preliminary findings indicate neither impairment nor speed is believed to have been a contributing factor.

Barton Hill Road was closed for several hours while sheriff’s office members carried out the scene investigation and a collision reconstruction. Anyone who may have seen the incident is asked to contact Schoharie County Investigator Julia Valvo at the sheriff’s office.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What You Can Do After a Fatal Pedestrian Crash in New York

Families in Schoharie County can take these six steps while the investigation is open and evidence is still easy to preserve:

  • Ask the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office for the crash report number and the contact for the investigation, since reconstruction findings can take time to finalize.
  • Ask in writing that the vehicle involved not be repaired, sold, or salvaged until its data can be examined.
  • Send insurance calls to one family member or to an attorney, and do not give a recorded statement or sign a release.
  • Order several certified copies of the death certificate, and keep every funeral, burial, and medical bill.
  • Notify the no-fault insurer in writing within 30 days of the crash, which here means by December 2, 2026.
  • Ask nearby homes and businesses about camera footage, which is often overwritten quickly, and avoid posting about the crash online.
