Petersburgh, NY – Five Injured, Two Airlifted in Three-Car Crash on Route 2 at River Road

Five Injured, Two Airlifted in Three-Car Crash

Petersburgh, NY (June 14, 2026) – Five people were injured, two of them airlifted in serious condition, after a three-vehicle crash on New York State Route 2 near River Road in the Town of Petersburgh, according to the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 2:10 p.m. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a Jeep traveling westbound on Route 2 struck a Chevrolet traveling eastbound. The collision caused the Chevrolet to strike a third vehicle traveling behind it, police say.

All five injured people were taken for medical care. Two required airlift transport and are in serious condition, according to officials. Three others were transported by ambulance. Victims were taken to Albany Medical Center and Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Route 2 near River Road was shut down for several hours as a result of the crash and did not reopen until just before 8 p.m., according to law enforcement.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

A crash that sends five people to the hospital and closes a highway for hours leaves families waiting for answers and unsure of what comes next. People injured in a multi-vehicle collision have legal options, and those options have deadlines.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents on New York State Routes

When a crash involves multiple vehicles, liability is rarely settled quickly. Each driver’s insurer will conduct its own investigation, and those investigations are designed to protect the insurer, not the people who were hurt.

  • Who may be liable: In a multi-vehicle chain reaction, liability can fall on one driver, shared between multiple drivers, or involve a road condition or defect. The final determination follows the investigation. Injured occupants in any of the vehicles may have a claim regardless of where fault ultimately lands.
  • New York’s comparative negligence rule: Under New York law, an injured person can recover damages even if they were partially at fault for the crash, as long as another party shares responsibility. Partial fault does not eliminate a claim; it reduces it proportionally.
  • Do not give recorded statements to any insurance company — including your own — before speaking with an attorney. Adjusters are trained to use early statements to minimize payouts.
  • Preserve evidence now: Skid marks, vehicle positions, and witness accounts change or disappear within days. Route 2 has since reopened, which means physical evidence at the scene is gone. Medical records, accident reports, and any available dashcam footage should be requested as soon as possible.
  • Filing deadline: Under New York law, most personal injury claims must be filed within three years of the accident date (CPLR § 214). For this crash, that deadline falls on June 14, 2029. Do not wait until the investigation closes to consult an attorney.

Being airlifted from a crash scene on a Sunday afternoon, or waiting at the hospital while a family member is, is not something anyone prepares for. The days that follow bring medical bills, missed work, and a flood of calls from insurance companies — often before anyone fully understands the extent of their injuries.

Our Upstate New York car accident lawyers have spent decades handling exactly this kind of multi-vehicle collision across Rensselaer County and the surrounding region. Multi-vehicle crashes involve competing insurance claims from multiple parties, and the side that moves first on evidence typically has the advantage. We know how to work these cases, and we know the roads where they happen.

Vehicle data and witness accounts from a crash like this deteriorate fast. The sooner an attorney is working to preserve what matters, the stronger your position becomes when it counts.
