Remsen, NY – Daniel Ricci, 61, Airlifted After Pickup Turns Into Motorcycle’s Path on Route 12

Daniel Ricci, 61, Airlifted

Remsen, NY (August 20, 2026) – At the intersection of Route 12 and Steuben Street in the town of Remsen, a northbound motorcyclist was seriously injured when a pickup truck driver turned left directly into his path, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 4 p.m., Daniel Ricci, 61, of Frankfort, was riding a 2011 Yamaha motorcycle northbound on Route 12 when a 2022 Ram 1500 pickup truck operated by Jordan Mirabito, 27, of Norwich, turned left onto Route 12 from Steuben Street, deputies said. The motorcycle and the pickup collided in the intersection. Several bystanders who were not involved in the crash stopped to render aid before first responders arrived.

Ricci was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with serious injuries. Mirabito was not injured. Deputies did not indicate whether Mirabito received any citations or charges. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Unit, Forensic Unit, and Accident Reconstruction Unit all responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Motorcycle Accidents on Upstate New York Roads

A left-turn crash is one of the most common ways motorcyclists are seriously injured, and New York law is clear on the obligation that falls on the turning driver.

  • The left-turn rule: Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, a driver making a left turn must yield the right of way to vehicles approaching from the opposite direction. Ricci was traveling northbound on Route 12 with the right of way. Mirabito was turning left off Steuben Street into that lane. The legal burden to clear the intersection safely fell on Mirabito before he began that turn.
  • What investigators examine: The Accident Reconstruction Unit’s presence at the scene means a technical analysis of the crash is underway. Investigators look at vehicle positions, skid marks, damage patterns, and witness accounts to establish exactly how the turn was executed and what Mirabito’s sight line and speed were at the time. That report will matter for any civil claim.
  • Motorcycle bias in crash investigations: Riders involved in left-turn crashes frequently encounter assumptions that they were speeding or riding recklessly. An independent attorney-led investigation looks at the same evidence the sheriff’s office is reviewing, and builds a record that addresses those assumptions directly. Ricci’s speed, lane position, and behavior on Route 12 are all documentable from the reconstruction data.
  • The severity of the injuries: Airlifted patients with serious injuries often face weeks or months of hospitalization, follow-on surgeries, extended rehabilitation, and the possibility of long-term disability. A civil claim against Mirabito can seek compensation for all of it, including medical costs, lost income, and pain and suffering, separately from whatever criminal or traffic determination the county makes.

Under New York law, Ricci has three years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury claim (CPLR § 214). For an injury on August 20, 2026, that deadline falls on August 20, 2029. The Accident Reconstruction Unit’s findings and any traffic citations that follow are worth tracking, but an attorney can begin preserving evidence and building the case now rather than waiting for those outcomes.
