Richmondville, NY (Oct. 1, 2026) – A head-on collision killed one driver and seriously injured two others Thursday morning. New York State Police responded around 9:52 a.m. on State Route 10.
Investigators said Jonathan R. Hynes, 46, of Albany, was driving northbound. His vehicle entered the southbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. Hynes was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in Hynes’s vehicle and the southbound driver both sustained serious injuries. Both were airlifted to Albany Medical Center. Police reported both remained in critical but stable condition on October 2.
State Route 10 remained closed in both directions until approximately 3 p.m. Troopers investigated the collision and conducted crash reconstruction. The investigation remained ongoing when State Police issued their October 2 update.
Our condolences go to Jonathan Hynes’s family and loved ones. We also wish both injured people a full recovery.
Legal Options After a Head-On Collision in New York
Injured drivers and passengers should review insurance requirements promptly after a head-on collision. Eligible occupants generally submit no-fault claims to the insurer covering their occupied vehicle. These benefits can address covered medical expenses and lost earnings. Written notice is generally required within 30 days after the accident. Late notice requires written proof providing a clear, reasonable justification.
A driver’s death does not automatically end an injured person’s potential claim. New York law allows injury claims against a deceased person’s personal representative. This is the person legally authorized to act for the estate. The claimant must still establish liability and prove the resulting damages.
A separate claim may address losses that no-fault benefits do not cover. However, New York generally requires a qualifying serious injury for pain-and-suffering compensation. A police description of serious injuries does not independently establish that legal threshold. An attorney should evaluate the medical evidence and applicable requirements.
