Schenectady, NY (Sept. 30, 2026) – Two drivers went to local hospitals following collisions involving a reported stolen SUV. Schenectady police said both drivers complained of pain after Wednesday afternoon’s crashes.
The incident began around 3:10 p.m., when officers spotted a black SUV. Police observed the vehicle near Eastern Avenue and Elmer Avenue. The SUV had been reported stolen in Glens Falls earlier that day.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, according to police. The SUV struck two vehicles near Crosstown (Route 7) and Golf Road. It then hit a parked vehicle near State Street and Fehr Avenue.
The SUV stopped there, and officers detained two juvenile boys inside. Police said neither boy suffered injuries. The report did not provide further details about the hospitalized drivers’ conditions.
The Schenectady Police Department continued investigating the incident following the collisions.
We wish the injured drivers a smooth recovery.
Insurance Options After a Stolen-Vehicle Crash in New York
A collision involving a stolen vehicle does not automatically leave victims without insurance options. New York’s uninsured-motorist provisions specifically address crashes involving stolen vehicles. However, coverage depends on the policy, supporting evidence, and applicable legal requirements.
Injured drivers generally start no-fault claims with the insurer covering their occupied vehicle. These benefits can help cover eligible medical expenses and lost wages. New York generally requires written no-fault notice within 30 days of the accident. Limited exceptions require a clear, reasonable justification for filing late. Do not wait for the police investigation to finish before reviewing insurance deadlines.
Uninsured-motorist coverage may provide another avenue for eligible injury claims. Pain-and-suffering compensation under that coverage generally requires a legally qualifying serious injury. Hospital transport alone does not establish that threshold. An attorney must evaluate the medical evidence and applicable coverage before assessing recovery options.
