fatal motorcycle crash in Schroeppel

Schroeppel, NY (Oct. 9, 2026) – A 22-year-old Baldwinsville man, identified as Hunter J. Hennessey, died after a motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at County Route 57 and Bankrupt Road, according to New York State Police. Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 7:34 a.m. on the morning of October 9 in the town of Schroeppel. The motorcycle operator was pronounced deceased at the scene.

State Police said a preliminary investigation determined that the 2024 motorcycle was traveling southbound on County Route 57 when the operator attempted to pass a tractor-trailer near the intersection. At the same time, a 2022 GMC Sierra pickup truck, operated by a 46-year-old man from Baldwinsville, was crossing County Route 57. The motorcycle then collided with the pickup truck.

After the collision, the motorcycle caught fire, according to State Police. The investigation remains ongoing.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What Families Can Do After a Fatal Motorcycle Crash in New York

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, using data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, reported that 194 people were killed in motorcycle crashes in New York State in 2023, or 17.5% of all traffic fatalities. The same committee reported that motorcycle crashes in New York rose 31 percent between 2020 and 2025. Behind those figures are families who face the same practical questions in the first days.

  • Ask State Police for the crash report number and the contact for the investigating unit. Every insurance and legal question starts from that report.
  • Ask that the motorcycle, helmet, and riding gear be kept as they are and not released for salvage. Physical evidence can matter long after the road reopens.
  • Send calls from insurance companies to one trusted family member or to an attorney. Do not agree to a recorded statement before you understand your rights.
  • Order several certified copies of the death certificate. Banks, insurers, and employers each tend to ask for one.
  • Keep records of funeral, medical, and towing costs, along with the rider’s pay stubs. These document the family’s financial loss.
  • Look for homes and businesses near the intersection with cameras, and ask about footage soon. Many systems record over old video within days.

Fatal Motorcycle Claims in New York

Crashes that involve a motorcycle passing one vehicle while another vehicle crosses the road often turn on details. Investigators typically look at sight lines, where the tractor-trailer was positioned, whether the crossing driver checked for oncoming traffic, and how fast each vehicle was moving. State Police describe their findings so far as preliminary.

Fault can be shared. For motor vehicle injury claims, New York’s modified comparative fault rule bars recovery only when the claimant’s fault equals or exceeds the combined fault of the defendants. A first description of a pass does not decide that question, because the final share depends on the full evidence.

Insurers sometimes point to a rider’s speed or a pass to reduce what they offer. That is why the complete investigation, not an early summary, should guide any settlement talk.

  • Who may be liable: the driver and owner of the crossing pickup truck, and any other party the evidence implicates.
  • What a claim can cover: a wrongful death claim, brought by the estate’s personal representative, can seek funeral and medical expenses, lost financial support, and lost services and guidance. A separate survival claim covers the rider’s own losses before death, where the evidence supports them.
  • Insurance that may apply: the pickup driver’s liability policy, plus any uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage on the rider’s own policy.
  • Deadline: this crash occurred on October 9, 2026. Under EPTL § 5-4.1, the wrongful death deadline is October 9, 2028, two years from the date of death.
