Syracuse, NY (July 31, 2026) – A 3-year-old girl died after a driver charged with driving while intoxicated struck a tree at Park Street and DeWitt Street in Syracuse early on July 31, the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office confirmed. The Syracuse Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 12:28 a.m.
The child was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the vehicle were also injured and transported to Upstate University Hospital, where both were listed in stable condition.
Before emergency personnel arrived, neighbors who witnessed the crash from a nearby porch ran to the scene and attempted to help. A neighbor who did not want to be identified said the passengers in the backseat were not in car seats at the time of the crash, though a car seat was present in the vehicle. Onondaga County Assistant District Attorney Frank Pelosi confirmed that a car seat was found outside the vehicle when he arrived at the scene on July 31. Whether the child was secured in the car seat at the time of impact is part of the ongoing investigation, Pelosi said.
The driver, a woman whose name has not been released, was also transported to Upstate University Hospital and listed in stable condition. Pelosi confirmed she has been charged with driving while intoxicated and will be brought to the Justice Center for arraignment once she is cleared from the hospital. Pelosi said additional charges, including vehicular manslaughter, remain under consideration.
