Robert LaPlaca, 38, of Rodman Airlifted After Motorcycle Crash on Route 180

Naples, NY (July 1, 2026) – Brian P. Johnson, 71, of Naples died following a three-car crash on County Road 12 in Naples, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reported. A Cohocton woman driving one of the vehicles was critically injured and airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Deputies responded at around 3:40 p.m. on July 1, 2026, after reports of a rollover crash with at least one vehicle on fire and multiple people trapped.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, three vehicles were involved: a Nissan Pathfinder, a Chevy pickup truck towing a camper, and a GMC Terrain.

Deputies say a 40-year-old Cohocton woman was driving the Nissan northbound on County Road 12 with two children in the vehicle, a six-year-old and an eight-month-old. Johnson was driving the Chevy pickup southbound with his wife as a passenger, according to OCSO.

The sheriff’s office reported that the Nissan crossed into the oncoming lane and struck the Chevy pickup head-on. A 34-year-old Fairport man who was driving the GMC Terrain southbound directly behind the pickup’s camper then struck the camper. The Nissan rolled over after the initial impact, deputies added.

Both the Nissan and the Chevy pickup caught fire. The GMC driver left his vehicle and pulled the Nissan driver and her two children from the burning car, OCSO reported. The children sustained minor injuries. The Nissan driver was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight and is listed in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. His two dogs also died in the fire, OCSO reported. A bystander pulled Johnson’s wife from the Chevy pickup before emergency crews arrived. She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with leg fractures and is expected to make a full recovery, according to deputies.

The Fairport man who drove the GMC sustained minor injuries.

Naples and Bristol fire departments, along with Naples and Canandaigua EMS, responded to the crash. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division is handling the ongoing investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

When a crash on a rural road claims a life and leaves other family members hospitalized, the questions that follow will not wait for the investigation to close. New York law gives families the right to act now.

What to Do After a Fatal Car Accident in Upstate New York

A fatal multi-vehicle crash can give rise to both wrongful death claims and personal injury claims under New York law. In most cases, those claims can move forward while a sheriff’s investigation remains open.

Can the family pursue a claim before the investigation concludes?

Yes. A civil wrongful death claim runs on a separate legal track from any criminal or regulatory review. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division’s ongoing work does not block the family from retaining an attorney or beginning a civil claim. Early legal involvement also helps preserve physical evidence while it is still accessible.

What can a wrongful death claim cover?

Under New York’s Estates, Powers and Trusts Law § 5-4.1, the administrator of the decedent’s estate may seek compensation for the financial support the decedent would have provided, funeral and burial expenses, and the loss of guidance and companionship. When a driver’s conduct is the initiating cause of a fatal collision, that driver and their insurer may be named as defendants in a civil action.

What does the investigation status mean for the family?

OCSO has already documented the vehicles involved, the sequence of events, and the parties. An attorney can request records from that investigation, commission an independent accident reconstruction, and issue legal preservation demands for vehicle event data before those records are archived or overwritten. Waiting too long narrows what remains available.

What is the filing deadline?

New York requires a wrongful death claim to be filed within two years of the date of death under EPTL § 5-4.1. For a death on July 1, 2026, that deadline falls on July 1, 2028. A personal injury claim for a survivor injured in the same crash is governed by a three-year deadline under CPLR § 214, placing it at July 1, 2029.
