Killed in Two-Vehicle Head-On Collision

Town of Monroe, NY (May 23, 2026) – Daryl Baker, 43, of Monroe, was killed Saturday evening when a 2019 Toyota crossed the center line and struck his 2025 Subaru head-on around 7:14 p.m. on Lakes Road in the town of Monroe.

Troopers from the Monroe barracks of the New York State Police responded to the scene. The preliminary investigation revealed that the 2019 Toyota was traveling southwest on Lakes Road when it crossed the center line into the opposing northeast lane and struck the 2025 Subaru driven by Baker head-on. Baker was located inside his vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota, Robert Molina, 61, also of Monroe, was extricated from his vehicle, given lifesaving measures at the scene, and transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown in critical condition. According to the New York State Police, the investigation remains ongoing.

Further information is expected to be released by authorities as it becomes available.

Wrongful Death Claims Following Fatal Crashes in New York

Head-on collisions are among the most devastating crashes on New York’s roads. When a vehicle crosses the center line into oncoming traffic, the impact forces leave little chance for occupants of the opposing vehicle to avoid serious or fatal injury, and surviving family members are often left to face both a sudden loss and a complex legal process.

Under New York’s wrongful death statute, surviving family members of a person killed in a motor vehicle crash may pursue a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for funeral and burial expenses, lost future earnings, and the loss of the victim’s care, guidance, and support. New York allows two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death action, and the state follows a pure comparative negligence standard, meaning recovery is possible regardless of how fault is ultimately distributed between the parties. Fatal crash investigations also turn on time-sensitive evidence, including vehicle event data recorder (“black box”) data, vehicle inspection records, roadway evidence, and any available surveillance or dashcam footage. This evidence can be lost or overwritten within days if not formally preserved. Speaking with an experienced Upstate New York wrongful death attorney as soon as possible can help families secure that evidence and protect every available source of recovery.
