Lima, NY - William Edwards, 55, of LeRoy Dies After Motorcycle Crash on East Main Road

Lima, NY (Oct. 10, 2026) – William Edwards, 55, of LeRoy has died after a motorcycle crash on East Main Road in Lima, according to Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies.

The crash happened on October 10 at around 6:30 p.m. Deputies say they responded to the area of East Main Road near the Village of Lima line. They had received calls about a reported crash involving a motorcycle.

According to deputies, Edwards was riding his motorcycle on East Main Road when he left the road and entered a wooded area. Edwards later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Single-Motorcycle Crashes and Wrongful Death Claims in New York

Deputies have not said why the motorcycle left East Main Road, and no cause has been announced. In a single-vehicle crash, investigators commonly examine the road surface, signage, lighting, weather, mechanical or tire failure, and whether another vehicle played a part.

A family does not have to wait for those answers to understand its options. After a rider’s death, the estate’s personal representative can bring a wrongful death claim for the family’s losses. A separate survival claim covers what the rider endured before death.

  • Who may be liable: That depends on what investigators find. It could be another driver, a parts maker or repair shop if a defect surfaces, or a public agency if road conditions contributed.
  • If fault is shared: For motor vehicle claims, New York now bars recovery when the rider’s fault equals or exceeds the combined fault of the others responsible (CPLR § 1411(b), effective May 26, 2026).
  • Government notice: If a public agency is responsible for the road, New York generally requires a notice of claim within 90 days, which puts that deadline at January 8, 2027. Claims against the State follow a separate 90-day rule, and missing either notice usually ends the claim.
  • Filing deadlines: A wrongful death claim must be filed within two years of the date of death (EPTL § 5-4.1). The sheriff’s office has not given that date, so the deadline falls no earlier than October 10, 2028. A survival claim follows the three-year rule (CPLR § 214), which runs to October 10, 2029.
