Mamakating, New York – A fatal two-vehicle collision occurred on Saturday evening, March 22, 2025, on the eastbound side of State Route 17 near Exit 113 in the Town of Mamakating, claiming the life of a 65-year-old man and injuring one other.
According to New York State Police, a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter Van driven by Robert Cromer, 62, of Liberty, NY, was traveling westbound on Route 17 when it left the roadway via the south shoulder. The vehicle crossed the center median and entered the eastbound lanes, traveling the wrong way, before striking a 2021 Hyundai head-on.
Both vehicles then collided with the southern guiderail before coming to a stop.
The operator of the Hyundai, identified as Jose A. Santiago Jr., 65, of Washingtonville, NY, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His passenger, Blanca I. Santiago, 64, also of Washingtonville, was transported by ambulance to Garnet Medical Center in Middletown, where she remains in stable condition.
Cromer sustained minor injuries, was evaluated at the scene, and released.
