Steps to Take After a Car Collision in Upstate, NY

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee reported 681 crash deaths in New York in the first 10 months of 2025. In upstate New York, deaths fell from 490 to 420 over the same period. Behind each of those numbers is a crash followed by the same early decisions, and the first days often shape the claim that follows. These steps protect both health and evidence:

  • Ask the Hamburg Police Department for the crash report number and the contact for the Accident Investigation Unit.
  • Anyone hurt should keep every hospital record and bill, and report symptoms that show up later.
  • File the no-fault application with your own insurer. New York requires written notice within 30 days, which is November 16, 2026.
  • Ask that both vehicles be held and not released for salvage, since they are evidence.
  • Send insurance company calls to one person, and do not give a recorded statement or sign a release without advice.
  • Families should request several certified copies of the death certificate and keep funeral and medical expense records.
