Ava, NY (Aug 27, 2026) – A tractor-trailer driver was airlifted to the hospital after a head-on crash in the town of Ava that also claimed two lives.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 7 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, on State Route 294 near Gleasman Road. Investigators say a 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan, driven by 52-year-old Darrel Gray Jr. of West Leyden, crossed from the eastbound lane into oncoming traffic and struck the front of a tractor-trailer driven by 46-year-old Erik Rowland of Woodgate, who was traveling westbound in his own lane at the time.
Rowland’s truck struck a guardrail after the impact. He was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Gray and his 17-year-old daughter, who was riding with him, did not survive.
