Clarkstown, NY (June 21, 2025) – A fatal three-vehicle collision occurred early Saturday morning on Interstate 87 southbound in the Town of Clarkstown, Rockland County, according to the New York State Police.
At approximately 3:01 a.m., troopers from Troop T Zone 1 responded to reports of a crash involving a wrong-way driver near Mile Marker 18.9, just west of Exit 12. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2024 Subaru WRX, driven by 33-year-old Brian P. Tortora of New York, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided with a 2017 Volvo truck towing a trailer, operated by 52-year-old Roberto A. Rondon-Fleites.
Moments later, a 2016 Freightliner towing a trailer, operated by 27-year-old Wilber M. Ramos, struck the Subaru and subsequently collided with the Volvo truck before coming to rest.
Mr. Tortora, the sole occupant of the Subaru, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Rondon-Fleites sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Nyack Hospital for treatment. Mr. Ramos was uninjured. All three drivers were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit processed the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
