Johnstown, NY – Driver Dies After Car Collides With Tractor-Trailer on Route 29

Route 29 crash Johnstown NY

Johnstown, NY (Oct. 22, 2026) – A driver died after a car and a tractor-trailer collided at the intersection of Route 29 and Maloney Road in Johnstown on the afternoon of October 22, according to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).

Deputies responding to the area around 3 p.m. determined that the car reportedly turned onto Route 29 from Maloney Road and collided with a tractor-trailer heading east on Route 29. The driver of the car was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, where the driver later died from injuries.

The FCSO confirmed that the tractor-trailer’s driver and the trucking company have been cooperative with law enforcement. New York State Police, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Johnstown EMS Squad, Fulton County EMO, Lake Valley Ambulance, and the Johnstown and Berkshire Fire Departments assisted deputies with the operation. The cause of the crash and all contributing factors remain under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office has identified the driver of the car as 45-year-old Chad Etherton. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Etherton had over 20 years of experience as a state corrections officer.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Trucking Company Liability After a Tractor-Trailer Crash in New York

A tractor-trailer crash can involve more than the two drivers. Depending on what the evidence shows, responsibility can reach the truck driver, the trucking company, and any company that maintained the rig or loaded its cargo. Each may carry its own insurance.

Trucking cases turn on records most people never see. These include driver logs kept under federal hours-of-service rules, inspection and maintenance files, and data from the truck’s electronic control module. A preservation letter asks the carrier to keep that material before it can be lost.

Early reports describe the car turning onto Route 29 from Maloney Road, but investigators have not said who was at fault. Fault in an intersection crash can depend on sight lines, speed, and timing. Those findings often take weeks or months to come out.

  • What decides it: the official crash report, any reconstruction findings, driver logs, truck data, and camera footage.
  • If fault is shared: for New York motor vehicle claims, recovery is barred when a claimant’s fault equals or exceeds the combined fault of the defendants (CPLR 1411(b)).
  • Wrongful death claim: under EPTL 5-4.1, the estate’s personal representative generally must file within two years of the date of death, so treat October 22, 2028 as the outside date.
  • Survival claim: a separate claim for the pain and suffering before death has a three-year window under CPLR 214, which runs to October 22, 2029.
