Niagara Falls, NY – A 42-year-old man from Niagara Falls is recovering after his pickup truck crashed through a fence and plunged into the Niagara Gorge near the Whirlpool Bridge on Wednesday evening.
According to New York State Park Police, the crash occurred around 6:25 p.m. near Depot Avenue, close to the Aquarium of Niagara. Emergency crews initially responded to a medical call at the scene, only to discover that the man had driven his 2008 Toyota Tundra through a barrier and down into the gorge.
Miraculously, the man was able to exit the vehicle and climb out of the gorge on foot. He received immediate medical assistance at the top and was later transported to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo with non-life-threatening injuries.
The New York State Park Police are leading the investigation into the crash with support from the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office. The man’s identity has not been released.
Police confirmed that there were no other individuals in or near the vehicle after conducting a thorough search of the area.
Officials with the New York State Parks & Historic Sites are overseeing the logistics for removing the heavily damaged pickup truck from the gorge. As of April 7, there were no additional updates available from park authorities.
We are grateful that the victim survived this serious crash and extend our best wishes for his continued recovery.
