New Baltimore, NY – Coxsackie Woman, 50, Killed in Head-On Crash With Box Truck on Route 9W

New Baltimore NY truck crash

New Baltimore, NY (Oct. 28, 2026) – Lenore M. Nevins, 50, of Coxsackie, died after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of County Route 51 and State Route 9W in the town of New Baltimore, according to the New York State Police.

Troopers from SP Coxsackie and SP Catskill, the Catskill Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Troop F Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the collision at about 10:26 a.m. on October 28, State Police said.

The preliminary investigation determined that Nevins’ 2023 Nissan Altima was traveling on County Route 51. While making a left turn onto State Route 9W to travel northbound, the Nissan entered the southbound lane and collided head-on with a southbound 2016 Hino commercial box truck, according to police.

Nevins was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. The operator of the Hino was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel for minor injuries.

The collision remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What Families Can Do After a Fatal Truck Crash in New York

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported, using state data, that New York had 9,148 large truck and bus crashes in 2021 that resulted in 125 deaths. Nationally, 11 percent of all crash deaths in 2023 occurred in large truck crashes, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Families facing a loss like this can take a few practical steps while they decide what comes next.

  • Ask State Police for the crash report number and the contact for the investigating unit.
  • Ask that the Nissan not be released, repaired, or sent for salvage, because it may hold evidence.
  • Send insurance calls to one trusted person, and do not give a recorded statement or sign a release.
  • Order several certified copies of the death certificate, since banks, insurers, and employers each ask for one.
  • Keep every hospital, air transport, and funeral bill in one folder.
  • Avoid posting about the crash or who was at fault online.

Legal Considerations After a Fatal Truck Collision in New Baltimore, NY

A wrongful death claim in New York is brought by the personal representative of the estate for the family. A separate survival claim covers the person’s own losses before death (EPTL §§ 5-4.1, 11-3.2). The filing deadline is two years from the date of death. If Nevins died on October 28, 2026, that is October 28, 2028.

When a commercial truck is involved, a claim can reach beyond the driver to the company that operates the truck, its owner, and any maintenance or loading contractor. The evidence that disappears first includes the truck’s electronic control module data, any dashcam video, driver logs, and maintenance records. A preservation letter asks the carrier to keep them. State Police say their Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded, so inspection findings may exist.

State Police describe a left turn, and a turning driver generally must yield to oncoming traffic (Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1141). A preliminary account is not a final finding of fault. The truck’s speed, sight lines at the intersection, and the placement of signs and signals can all matter.

County Route 51 meets State Route 9W. If the county or the State is responsible for the intersection’s design, signs, or sight lines, a notice of claim is generally due within 90 days (General Municipal Law § 50-e, and Court of Claims Act § 10 for the State). That puts the deadline at January 26, 2027. If fault is shared, CPLR § 1411(b), as amended in 2026, bars a motor vehicle claim when the injured person’s fault equals or exceeds the combined fault of the defendants. Otherwise, damages are reduced by that person’s share.
