Binghamton, NY (October 10, 2025) – One individual was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 southbound near the Exit 12 off-ramp Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 11:05 a.m. October 9th, 2025, Emergency responders, including Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and EMS, arrived to find a U-Haul truck towing another vehicle engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside. Crews worked with New York State Department of Transportation personnel to extinguish the fire and remove the driver, who was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center and pronounced dead at approximately 12:40 p.m.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the U-Haul truck was struck by a red SUV while attempting to take the Exit 12 off-ramp. A New York State Department of Transportation vehicle was also involved in the collision. Authorities are reviewing the scene to determine contributing factors, including speed, vehicle positioning, and roadway conditions.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of the family. Road closures and traffic disruptions occurred while emergency crews secured the scene.
