87-Year-Old Driver Killed in Three-Car Crash on Danbury Road

Southeast, NY (November 3, 2026) – An 87-year-old woman died after a three-vehicle crash on Danbury Road in the town of Southeast around 7:20 a.m. on November 3, according to New York State Police.

Helen T. Gambino, 87, of Brewster, was stopped at a stop sign on Dingle Ridge Road, police said. She pulled onto Danbury Road, where her Subaru was struck by an eastbound BMW driven by a 19-year-old from Danbury, Connecticut.

The impact caused the Subaru to overturn and come to rest in the center median. The BMW then struck a Honda driven by a 23-year-old, also from Danbury, according to police.

Gambino was taken to Danbury Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The BMW driver was taken to the same hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The Honda driver was not injured.

Steps to Take After a Fatal Three-Car Collision in Southeast, NY

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 8,019 people 65 and older died in U.S. traffic crashes in 2024, or 20 percent of all traffic deaths. NHTSA also found that 68 percent of 2023 traffic deaths in crashes involving older drivers happened in multi-vehicle crashes. When several vehicles are involved, the early steps a family takes can shape the whole claim.

  • Request the State Police crash report, and ask the investigator whether data from all three vehicles has been preserved.
  • Find the policy declarations page for the driver who died, since it lists liability, no-fault, and uninsured or underinsured limits.
  • Get the names of the other drivers and their insurers from the report, and do not speak with those insurers yourself.
  • If it is safe, photograph the intersection, the stop sign, and the median before weather or repairs change them.
  • Ask Danbury Hospital for the medical records and keep every bill that follows.

Legal Next Steps After a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash in New York

A crash with three vehicles can involve several drivers, several insurers, and more than one version of events. The information released so far does not assign fault, so each driver’s speed, position, and view of the road will matter. These are the legal steps families usually face, in order.

  1. Name an estate representative. Only a personal representative appointed by Surrogate’s Court can bring a wrongful death claim in New York (EPTL 5-4.1).
  2. Know what the claim covers. A wrongful death claim can include funeral costs, lost income and support, and the loss of guidance and care.
  3. Add the survival claim. The estate can also seek damages for what the person endured before death, generally within three years (CPLR 214), which is November 3, 2029.
  4. Understand shared fault. For motor vehicle claims, recovery is barred when the claimant’s fault equals or exceeds the combined fault of the defendants (CPLR 1411(b), as amended in 2026). An attorney checks how that applies to an estate’s claim.
  5. Mark the deadline. A wrongful death claim must be filed within two years of the date of death, which is November 3, 2028.
