What to Do After a Car Crash Into a Building in Syracuse, NY
New York’s no-fault system gives anyone hurt in a car crash only 30 days to give written notice to the no-fault insurer, so the first weeks matter even when injuries are not yet clear.
- Get checked within 72 hours, even without pain. Whiplash, concussion, and internal injuries can surface late, so watch for headache, neck stiffness, numbness, or abdominal pain.
- Preserve what disappears first. Photograph the vehicles and the damage before a tow or repair, note the tow yard’s name, and ask nearby businesses to save camera footage before it is overwritten.
- Handle insurance carefully. Report the crash to your own insurer and file the no-fault application. Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer. For a crash on October 14, 2026, the no-fault notice is due by November 13, 2026.
- Wait for the facts on responsibility. Police have not said what caused this crash, and fault depends on what investigators find. If fault is shared, New York bars recovery when a claimant’s fault equals or exceeds the combined fault of the defendants (CPLR § 1411(b)). Property damage and loss-of-use claims can run alongside any injury claim.
- Mark the filing deadline. Under New York law, a personal injury claim from this crash must generally be filed by October 14, 2029 (CPLR § 214).
