Town of Hounsfield, NY – Sackets Harbor Woman Hurt After Driver Fails to Yield at Stop Sign

Town of Hounsfield, NY (Sept 18, 2026) – A Sackets Harbor woman was taken to the hospital after a crash at the intersection of State Route 3 and County Route 66 in the town of Hounsfield, and the other driver involved has since died.

According to New York State Police, the crash happened around 4:49 p.m. on September 18. Troopers say an 83-year-old woman from New Hartford was driving a 2016 Honda Fit north on County Route 66, attempting to cross State Route 3 to reach State Route 180, when she failed to yield at a stop sign and entered the path of a 2024 Honda CR-V. The CR-V, driven by a 55-year-old Sackets Harbor woman, was traveling east on Route 3 at the time.

Both women were taken to Samaritan Medical Center. The Honda Fit’s driver was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Rural intersections where a smaller county road crosses a state highway, like this one, depend entirely on drivers on the side road stopping and waiting for a safe gap in traffic. When that does not happen, a vehicle traveling at highway speed on the main road often has no time to avoid the collision.

Fault, Age, and Right of Way in New York Crashes

A failure-to-yield finding at a stop sign, like the one here, is usually straightforward for investigators to confirm through skid marks, the final resting position of both vehicles, and physical evidence at the intersection. That clarity can work in your favor if you were the driver who was hit.

Crashes involving elderly drivers sometimes raise questions insurance companies are quick to explore: medical conditions, medication, vision, or reaction time, but none of that changes who had the legal right of way at that intersection. The Honda Fit was required to stop and wait for a safe opening in traffic regardless of the driver’s age or health.

If you were the driver of the CR-V, or you have been hurt in a similar crash, an attorney can request the accident report once finalized, obtain your medical records to document your injuries, and make sure the case is resolved ba
