Multiple Injured After Pickup Truck Strikes School Bus on Route 20

Bouckville, N.Y. (May 7, 2026) – Multiple people were injured when a pickup truck slammed into the back of a school bus on Route 20 Thursday morning, prompting emergency responders and New York State Police to the scene. The collision occurred around 7:15 a.m. in front of the Rutkowski family home in Madison County.

Jeremiah Rutkowski, a high school junior, was walking toward the Madison Central School District bus for school pickup when the truck struck the stopped bus from behind, pushing it down the road. Jeremiah jumped back to avoid flying debris before running to his porch. State Police said 23 students and one driver were aboard the bus. The pickup truck carried an adult and two children. All individuals were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Matt Rutkowski, Jeremiah’s father, heard the crash and immediately checked on his son before calling 911 and assisting at the scene with Good Samaritans until authorities arrived. New York State Police are investigating the crash. The circumstances that led the pickup truck to strike the bus have not been disclosed.

School Bus Accident Liability and Passenger Rights in New York

School bus accidents in New York raise complex legal questions about who bears responsibility for the safety of child passengers. Liability may extend to the bus driver, the school district, a private transportation contractor, or another motorist involved in the crash, depending on the specific facts of the incident. Because school districts are often government entities, strict procedural requirements may apply, including the need to file a Notice of Claim within 90 days of the incident before pursuing legal action.

New York operates under a pure comparative negligence standard, meaning that an injured party may recover compensation regardless of their share of fault, though any award is reduced proportionally. For passengers injured in bus accidents, the serious injury threshold under New York Insurance Law § 5102(d) must typically be met in order to pursue a pain and suffering claim outside of the No-Fault system. Families affected by a school bus crash should act quickly, as critical evidence including dashcam footage, maintenance records, and driver logs can be lost over time. Consulting an experienced Upstate New York car accident attorney can help families understand their rights and identify all potential sources of recovery following a serious bus accident.
