Utica, NY (July 13, 2025) – A woman was injured after colliding with a deer during the 48th annual Boilermaker 15K Road Race in Utica on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Master Garden Road, around the four-mile mark of the race, when a deer jumped out from a wooded area and struck the woman. Jim Stasaitis, race director, described the collision as a “freak accident.”
A fellow runner, Gregory Yorton, who was just ahead of the woman, heard rustling from the bushes and turned to see a “good-sized doe” darting around before it collided with the runner. Yorton stopped to assist, along with other runners, and called out for medical help.
Medics at the race provided immediate care to the woman, who sustained injuries to her head and leg. She was initially transported to Wynn Hospital in Utica and later transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for further treatment.
In addition to the deer collision, several runners experienced heat exhaustion during the race, with temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s and a heat index around 90. Seventy-seven runners were assisted by medics at the finish line, with six being transported to the hospital.
We wish the injured runner a full and swift recovery.
Personal Injury Accidents in New York
Accidents frequently occur along Interstate 87, Route 104, and busy roads such as Wolf Road, West Ridge Road, and Erie Boulevard throughout New York. These corridors often experience a mix of high-speed traffic, commercial vehicles, and adverse weather conditions, which increases the risk of serious incidents. Many of these accidents lead to fractures, spinal injuries, and head trauma, which may require emergency care, extended recovery time, and long-term medical treatment. For injured individuals and their families, the physical recovery is often matched by financial stress from lost wages and medical expenses. Because these incidents often involve multiple parties and complex liability questions, working with an experienced Utica personal injury lawyer is one of the most effective ways to protect your rights and secure fair compensation.
