Watervliet, NY – DWI Crash Involving Car and Gas Tanker Shuts Down I-787 Northbound

Watervliet, NY (April 12, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash involving a passenger car and a gas tanker shut down a section of I-787 Northbound early Saturday morning, according to New York State Police.

Troopers responded to reports of a crash near Exit 8 at approximately 12:30 a.m. An investigation revealed that a car traveling southbound in the northbound lanes struck a northbound Stewart’s Shops gas tanker head-on.

The driver of the car was identified as Chris Buregeya, 25, of Rensselaer. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated and transported to the barracks, where he recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.15%.

No injuries were reported in the collision. Hazmat teams and state police responded to monitor for any leakage. All three northbound lanes were closed from Exit 7 as a precaution. By 4:00 a.m., the road was reopened, and DOT crews began guardrail repairs.

Buregeya was issued tickets returnable to Watervliet City Court on April 22 and was later released.

We are thankful no injuries occurred in this serious incident.
