Westerlo, NY (June 30, 2025) – A tragic collision occurred Monday morning at the intersection of Route 401 and Route 404, resulting in one fatality and three critical injuries. According to Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, the crash happened around 10:30 a.m. when an SUV, carrying six people, failed to stop at a stop sign and was broadsided by a northbound tractor-trailer.
The trucker, traveling on Route 401, had no chance to avoid the collision due to the SUV’s failure to yield. Dashcam footage from the truck confirmed the trucker’s inability to react in time. The SUV was carrying six occupants, including three children aged 10-16, who were on their way to Zoom Flume Water Park in Greene County. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were critically injured and transported by ambulance and helicopter to nearby hospitals.
The tractor-trailer came to a stop almost on its side and began leaking diesel fuel near a reservoir that supplies water to the city of Albany. A hazmat team was called to the scene to assist with the cleanup.
The intersection, where this accident occurred, has been the site of prior incidents, according to Sheriff Apple. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
