Lancaster, PA (December 18, 2025) – A cyclist is fighting for their life following a major collision with a commercial tractor-trailer in downtown Lancaster on Thursday morning. The accident occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. at the busy intersection of North Lime Street and Orange Street. According to the Lancaster City Bureau of Police, the cyclist was struck by the truck under circumstances that remain under active investigation.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported the victim to a local hospital with injuries described as life-threatening. Lancaster police officers remained at the scene for several hours, conducting a thorough investigation that included documenting the interior of the truck and interviewing witnesses, as well as the driver. To allow the Crash Reconstruction Unit to process the area safely, the 100 block of North Lime Street was closed to traffic until early Thursday afternoon. While the investigation continues, officials have not yet released the identity of the cyclist or any specific updates on their medical status.
Liability and Recovery in Pennsylvania Bicycle and Commercial Truck Accidents
Collisions between bicyclists and large commercial vehicles like tractor-trailers are often catastrophic due to the extreme size and weight disparity between the two. In Pennsylvania, determining liability in these cases involves a complex examination of urban right-of-way laws and the high standard of care required of commercial drivers. Under state law, motorists are required to provide at least four feet of space when passing a bicycle, and truck drivers must be particularly vigilant regarding their substantial blind spots, or “No Zones,” especially when navigating tight city intersections like Lime and Orange Streets. Because Pennsylvania is a modified comparative negligence state, an injured cyclist can recover damages even if they are partially at fault, provided their share of the responsibility does not exceed 50 percent.
