Chemung, NY (June 02, 2025) – A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred on June 2, 2025, at approximately 12:15 p.m., when a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer collided with a 2002 Chevrolet sedan on Interstate 86 near Exit 58 in the town of Chemung. The crash, which involved significant front-end damage to both vehicles, occurred when the Chevrolet was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 67-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chemung County Medical Examiner. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Imran Shahid, age 44, of Canada, was evaluated at the scene for minor injuries but was not transported to a medical facility.
The incident prompted a response from multiple agencies, including the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU), and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU). The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) also responded due to a diesel fuel spill at the scene. Local fire departments, including Chemung and Wellsburg Fire, along with the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, assisted with the response.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
