state troopers hit by passing vehicle

Cairo, NY (November 17, 2025) – A tragic incident on State Route 23 in Cairo left a driver dead and two New York State Troopers injured after a passing vehicle struck the officers during a traffic stop just before 5:30 p.m. Monday.

According to officials, the troopers were engaged in a routine traffic stop along the roadway when a passing vehicle veered into the area and struck both officers. The driver of the striking vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency crews responded quickly and transported both troopers for medical evaluation. Authorities say the troopers are expected to survive, though details on the extent of their injuries have not yet been released.

State Route 23 was temporarily restricted while law enforcement conducted an on-scene investigation and cleared debris. The circumstances leading up to the collision, including whether speed, visibility, distraction, or failure to move over contributed, remain under review.

Your Rights After a Roadside Injury Crash

Roadside collisions involving disabled vehicles or traffic stops often result from drivers failing to comply with New York’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists to slow down and move over for emergency responders. When this law is violated, injured parties may have the right to pursue compensation for medical costs, lost income, and long-term recovery needs. Families of those killed due to negligent driving may also have grounds for wrongful death claims.
