New Windsor, NY (May 31, 2025) – A serious motor vehicle accident occurred on May 31, 2025, at approximately 3:40 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway (I-87) south of Exit 17 in New Windsor.
Troopers responded to reports of a rollover crash involving a 2014 Chevrolet Express van and a 2026 Subaru Outback. The investigation revealed that the Chevrolet van, carrying 16 individuals, struck the rear of the Subaru, which was slowing due to traffic. The impact caused the van to roll over, landing in the left lane, while the Subaru spun off the road and collided with a signpost on the right shoulder.
The van, which was occupied by the driver and 15 passengers, including 12 children aged one to 12, had significant damage. Emergency responders from the New Windsor Fire Department extricated a female passenger in the front seat, who was transported by helicopter to the Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver and four children from the van were treated at Garnet Health Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, while the remaining passengers received care at St. Luke’s Hospital. The driver of the Subaru was also taken to Garnet Health Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers issued tickets to the driver of the van for failing to properly restrain five of the children in the vehicle.
