West Hempfield, PA – Occupant Trapped, Multiple Injured in Five-Vehicle Crash

One Injured, Occupants Trapped in Five-Vehicle Crash

West Hempfield, PA (December 16, 2025) – A major multi-vehicle accident left at least one person trapped and multiple individuals injured in West Hempfield Township on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Lancaster County-Wide Communications, the pile-up was reported around 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Columbia Avenue and South 18th Street. Emergency dispatchers confirmed that five vehicles were involved in the collision. First responders arrived to find that at least one of the vehicles had flipped onto its side, leaving an occupant trapped within the wreckage.

West Hempfield Police and multiple fire units worked to extricate the trapped individual. While officials confirmed that injuries were reported at the scene and at least one person was transported for medical treatment, the exact number of victims and the severity of their injuries have not yet been disclosed. The crash site remained active for several hours as crews cleared the debris and investigated the cause of the multi-car wreck.

Liability in Multi-Vehicle Pile-Ups in Pennsylvania

This incident highlights the complexities of determining liability in multi-vehicle collisions. In a pile-up involving five vehicles, especially one involving a rollover, determining fault requires a detailed reconstruction of the “first impact” to identify which driver’s negligence initiated the chain reaction. Under Pennsylvania’s modified comparative negligence rule, a victim can recover damages as long as they are not more than 50% at fault for the accident.
