Luzerne County, PA – One Dead, Several Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-81

One dead, several injured after crash

Luzerne County, PA (November 17, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 South near the 145-mile marker turned deadly early Monday morning, forcing the full shutdown of the southbound lanes between West Hazleton and the Route 309 McAdoo/Tamaqua exit.

Emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 6:00 a.m. on 17th Nov, 2025, encountering icy roadway conditions and multiple injured individuals. According to the West Hazleton Fire Department, one man was located down an embankment, requiring a coordinated technical rope rescue with assistance from Hazle Township Fire and Rescue. He was lifted back to the roadway and transferred to EMS.

The Luzerne County Coroner responded after one victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the individual’s identity. Several others suffered injuries of varying severity, though officials have not confirmed the total number of those hurt.

All southbound lanes of I-81 remained closed for an extended period as first responders worked the crash scene and state police conducted their investigation. Traffic was diverted, causing significant delays throughout the morning commute.

Your Rights After a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Highway Crash

Crashes involving multiple vehicles often require detailed reconstruction to determine fault. In Pennsylvania, families of fatal-crash victims may pursue wrongful death claims, while injured survivors can seek compensation for medical costs, lost wages, and long-term impacts. Weather conditions do not eliminate liability if a driver was traveling too fast for conditions, failed to maintain control, or drove negligently on an icy roadway.
