South Abington Township, PA (November 2, 2025) – A serious wrong-way collision on Interstate 81 North sent three people to the hospital early Sunday morning, according to the Pennsylvania State Police at Dunmore.
The crash occurred around 12:15 a.m. near the Layton Road overpass (mile marker 193) when a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided head-on with another car. The engine compartment of one vehicle caught fire, prompting a rapid response from the Chinchilla Hose Company, Pennsylvania Ambulance, and state troopers.
Emergency crews extinguished the fire and extricated the victims from the wreckage. Police said that both drivers and a passenger in the wrong-way vehicle sustained serious injuries and were transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center for treatment.
Investigators suspect that alcohol impairment played a role in the crash and are awaiting toxicology results to confirm the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC).
DUI and Wrong-Way Crashes in Pennsylvania
Wrong-way accidents caused by impaired drivers often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the force of impact. Under Pennsylvania law, victims of drunk driving crashes may pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term care costs. Families of those severely injured may also seek punitive damages against the at-fault driver. An experienced Pennsylvania DUI car accident lawyer can help victims understand their rights and build a strong case for recovery.
