99.9% of Judges do the right thing

On one of my recent radio shows up in New York State north country last week, I was asked to comment on the case involving Larry Nassar, ex-coach for the US Gymnastic team. Some have been critical about how the judge in that particular case, Judge Aquilina, may have used the opportunity for her own personal and professional advancement.

So, here’s what I know for sure: The case is ALWAYS, ALWAYS about the victims. The victims should be the ones paid attention to and heard. It isn’t about the judge. The judges’ job is to be there, implement and oversee the legal process, listen, give sentence, then move on. There are always people who want to improperly take advantage of the situation or spotlight they’re put in.

99.9% of judges do the right thing. It’s hard to be a judge, to do the right thing despite public opinion sometimes. Judges take a lot of criticism, without any credit. Often they’re required to render decisions that are not favorable with the public polling at the time. That’s the job. They have to make tough decisions and follow the law. That’s why we have independent judges who’ll make those tough decisions, standing up to whoever is trying to persuade them otherwise.

Nobody’s perfect, and there will always be people who’ll want to showboat during their moment in the sun, so to speak. The vast majority of judges however do keep the focus on the case and the victims in the case. So, here’s what I know for sure: The case is ALWAYS, ALWAYS about the victims.
