Always ask your insurance agent the tough questions
Lots of rain around here lately! If you do get some flooding in your home, are you protected? If you don’t take some extra precautions, chances are you probably are not.
You should always make sure you know what’s covered on your homeowner’s insurance, including flooding. If you buy a house and the mortgage requires you to have flood insurance, then you have to have it. Because the bank wants to protect their interests. But there are other locations that may not be mandatory for flood insurance; whether you want to have it or not is your own discretion, because you still have floods there. You can also buy extra insurance for sump pump failure. It’s not much of an annual cost to do so and worth it.
Check your policies, because if you don’t tell your agent specifically that you want to add it and pay extra – unless you have a really thorough agent, it’s not going to be there for you when you need it most.
Earth movement in this part of the world sounds strange, but you might want to add that also. It’s not much of a cost and if there’s a mudslide or shifting of any kind that affects your home, you’ll want that for peace of mind. Remember in Lafayette/Tully where mudslides affected the entire area? That’s why you have earth movement coverage. Interestingly, because of fracking, earth movement insurance is a lot higher than it used to be, but still worthwhile to get.
