Olyphant, PA (October 18, 2025) – An 82-year-old woman, identified as Grace Smugereski of Olyphant, was tragically killed Friday morning after being struck during a multi-vehicle crash near the intersection of East Lackawanna and Adams Avenues, according to Olyphant Police Chief James DeVoe.
The incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. 17th October, 2025, when the driver of a Jeep Compass traveling southbound on Adams Avenue failed to stop at a stop sign and entered East Lackawanna Avenue. The Jeep collided with the side of a truck traveling eastbound, which had legally stopped before proceeding through the intersection, police said.
The impact of the crash pushed the truck onto the sidewalk, where it struck Smugereski, who was out for a morning walk. She was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple traumatic injuries, confirmed Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland.
Police and firefighters arrived quickly, extinguishing a vehicle fire that broke out following the collision. The names of the two drivers involved have not yet been released, and Pennsylvania State Police are assisting in the ongoing investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for next week.
