Driver Rescued After Car Plunges into Long Pond

Greece, NY (December 3, 2025) – A driver avoided serious injury Wednesday afternoon after her car crashed through ice and landed in Long Pond, located off the Lake Ontario State Parkway.

Reports of a vehicle in the water came in around 2:35 p.m. Chief Jason France from the Lake Shore Fire District reported that the car appeared to have left the road and become airborne before crashing near the shore. Bystanders were already in the water attempting to free the woman when first responders arrived.

The woman was rescued and taken to a local hospital. Although first responders initially searched for a child due to items found in the car, they confirmed no children had been inside the vehicle. The cause of the single-vehicle incident remains under investigation.

Understanding Liability in Single-Vehicle, Off-Road Crashes in New York

While single-vehicle accidents are often assumed to be the fault of the driver, an investigation into a crash like this, where a vehicle leaves the roadway and impacts the environment, must rigorously examine whether external factors contributed to the loss of control. In New York, an injured driver may be able to pursue a claim against a government entity if negligence related to roadway maintenance or design played a role.
